The Hobart Hurricanes are an Australian professional men's T20 cricket franchise headquartered in Tasmania. They compete in the Big Bash League, Australia's domestic T20 cricket competition in which several foreign stars compete. Hobart is represented by their team. The Hurricanes play the bulk of their home games at Blundstone Arena, with some games also taking place at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston. The Hurricanes' cricket uniform is purple.
Allister de Winter was the original coach of the Hobart Hurricanes, while Tim Paine was the inaugural captain.
The Hobart Hurricanes had a strong start to the inaugural Big Bash League season in 2011/12, winning their first game at the WACA Ground against the Perth Scorchers, scoring 140 before bowling them out for 109, with fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus earning selection for the annual Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Hurricanes defeated the Sydney Sixers by 42 runs in their second encounter, which took place at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took 15 wickets for the Hurricanes in the Big Bash League 2011-12 season.
