Today is a historical date in the planet. 24th February, 2010 is a prestigious date, month and year in the world calendar. Today the date and month has repeated to glorify the calendar. 13 years ago, everyone’s superhero Sachin Tendulkar became a first male cricketer who made double century in ODI cricket against South Africa at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior.
Details of historical moment
In 2nd ODI of February 24, 2010 India was fighting against the South Africa under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. India batted first and landed into trouble when Virendra Sehwag was knocked out with 25 runs on the board. However, his teammate Sachin Tendulkar took responsibility on his shoulders. Master Blaster left South Africa’s bowlers clueless with the score 200* off 147 deliveries. His score is inclusive of 25 fours and 3 sixes with at an amazing run rate of 136.05.
Tendulkar stayed on the field with MS Dhoni till the registration of 401 runs on the board in the innings. Dinesh Karthik (79) also contributed in scoring mammoth. Their contribution registered a target of 402 runs in 50 overs at the scoreboard.
Not to mention India won the 2nd One Day International match against South Africa by 153 runs. However, efforts of AB de Villiers got in vain as he scored 114 runs from 101 balls.
Soon after the Mater Blaster’s leading light of 200, Ravi Shashtri spoke golden words while doing commentary - "The first man on the planet to reach 200 and it's the superman from India - Sachin Tendulkar 200 from 147. Take a bow master."
After receiving the Man of the Match award in the presentation ceremony, Master Blaster dedicated his double century to the people of India. Tendulkar mentioned that his natives supported him in his entire journey of 20 years.
Around 30,000 individuals in the stands had witnessed this historical moment.
After the three years of his golden show, Sachin Tendulkar bid goodbye to international cricket in 2013. Before scoring double century, Sachin Tendulkar has scored 186 not out as his last best against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1999. However, Master Blaster is the highest run scorer in the Tests and ODIs till now. Record of making most international centuries has been registered on his name also.
Record continued by other batsmen
Before Master Blaster no other male cricketer has achieved this milestone. Though Australian cricketer Belinda Clark was the first women to achieve this record. Belinda Clark made ODI double hundred in Women’s World Cup match against Denmark in 1997.
This landmark continued by five other batsmen. India’s opener Rohit Sharma tops the list by making three double centuries – 264, 209, 208*. After two years of Tendulkar’s record, his teammate Virendra Sehwag scored 219 runs against the West Indies. Martin Guptill recorded the second highest score of 237 against the West Indies in the 2015 World Cup. Chris Gayle (215) and Fakhar Zam (210*) have joined the list in making double hundreds in ODI cricket.
