The Sydney Sixers were formed when the decision was made to shift the domestic Twenty20 tournament away from state-representative teams and toward city-based teams. This change is thought to have been made to match its structure with that of India and South Africa, where local teams are organized around cities. This was significant for the current Champions League Twenty20 tournament, in which those three countries were founding members. For an eight-team competition, it was determined that two teams from Sydney, two teams from Melbourne, and one from each other major city would compete. Cricket NSW chose the names Sixers (and Thunder for cross-city rivals). Rocks and Edge were two other names suggested for the two squads.
The Sydney Sixers are an Australian professional franchise men's cricket team that competes in the Big Bash League, Australia's domestic Twenty20 cricket league (BBL). The Sixers, together with the Sydney Thunder, are the successors to the New South Wales Blues, who competed in the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. The Sixers play at Sydney Cricket Ground in the inner city's southeast, while the Thunder play at Sydney Showground Stadium farther west. Trevor Bayliss was the first coach, and he was replaced in 2015 by current coach Greg Shipperd. Brad Haddin, the Sixers' first captain, was an Australian wicketkeeper. Both Steve Smith and Moises Henriques have served as team captains.
